Iona coach Rick Pitino advocates for 'May Madness'
Let's give credit where credit is due. It seems like Rick Pitino might be on to something.
When it comes to Pitino's popularity among Boston sports fans, it's a bit thin thanks to his tumultuous tenure with the Celtics. And he certainly has continued to have his issues since leaving New England, most notably being forced out as the coach of the Louisville men's basketball team.
Pitino now finds himself as the first-year coach for Iona, which just happens to be on the teams currently impacted by COVID-19. According to The Stadium's Jeff Goodman, the Gaels are one 20 programs that are shut down for the time being.

Save the Season. Move the start back. Play league schedule and have May Madness. Spiking and protocols make it impossible to play right now.— Rick Pitino (@RealPitino) November 14, 2020Iona's first four games have either been postponed or cancelled.
The 68-year-old Pitino has been coaching in the Euroleague since leaving Louisville in 2018. He joins a Gaels team that went 12-17 last season.
One mid-major program has been shut down for 52 days since July, one high-major shut down this week for 14, another had its second 14-day stoppage. It’s time to make a decision, NCAA. Bills' Josh Norman to miss Week 10 after testing positive for COVID
The Buffalo Bills announced on Saturday that cornerback Josh Norman has tested positive for COVID-19.
The team also announced that cornerback Levi Wallace, safety Dean Marlowe and tight end Tyler Kroft did not travel with the team to Arizona for their game against the Cardinals due to COVID-19 protocols. They were deemed to be in close contact with Norman and were all placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.
Defensive assistant coach Leonard Johnson also did not make the trip, which went on as scheduled for the rest of the team. The Bills play the Cardinals Sunday at 4:05 p.m. EST.
Safety Micah Hyde, who injured his ankle during Thursday's practice, is listed as questionable to play, so the loss of three more defensive backs could leave the group thin facing the Cardinals, who are the top-ranked offense in terms of yards per-game.
Teams are allowed one-for-one replacements for any active players placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. They are also allowed two elevations from the practice squad each week.
The team announced that linebacker Darron Lee, cornerbacks Dane Jackson and Daryl Worley, safety Josh Thomas, and wide receiver Jake Kumerow were all elevated from the practice squad for the contest.
Here is the official release from the team regarding the moves:

Red Sox’s Eduardo Rodriguez ‘100% ready for next season’ following difficult COVID bout
After a career-best season that saw him finish among the American League’s top ten in both victories (19) and strikeouts (213), Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez had hoped to build off his 2019 success with an even more emphatic 2020. Unfortunately, that plan never came to fruition.
Over the summer, E-Rod experienced myocarditis, a serious heart condition stemming from an earlier COVID bout. The 27-year-old was ultimately lost for the season, never seeing the mound in 2020 as the last-place Red Sox stumbled to an anemic 24-36 record, fourth-worst in the majors ahead of only Pittsburgh, Detroit and Texas.
Speaking Thursday on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM, the 6’2” left-hander acknowledged the ordeal was “kind of scary,” though luckily Rodriguez has since recovered and expects to be a full go for the start of next season, his final year under contract. “My wife had it too. We had all the symptoms and that was kind of hard for us,” said E-Rod, who joined the Red Sox at the 2014 trade deadline in a swap that sent prized reliever Andrew Miller to Baltimore. “I went to Boston for the start of the season over there, and then I got an MRI and they discovered that I had myocarditis. When they told me that, it was kind of hard for me, especially when they told me I wouldn’t have a chance to be available to play the season.”
The best news of the day - After myocarditis, after COVID-19, Eduardo Rodriguez is healthy and ready for a normal offseason routine.@RedSox | @eduardorod5 pic.twitter.com/UhTei0DoQq— MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (@MLBNetworkRadio) November 12, 2020With David Price gone (he and Mookie Betts were dealt to Los Angeles during the offseason) and Chris Sale facing a lengthy recovery from Tommy John surgery, Rodriguez was positioned to be the Red Sox’s staff ace … until myocarditis turned his world upside down.
"I asked [my doctors], ‘Is this something that I’m going to have the rest of my life? Is it going to ruin my career?’ But they just told me I had to take some time off and let it heal.” Beyond the uncertainty surrounding his health, being in isolation also weighed on Rodriguez, who admitted it was strange watching his teammates take the field without him. “It was really hard for me just sitting at home and watching them play every day,” said Rodriguez, who finished sixth in AL Cy Young voting in 2019. “I would say that was the hard part for me.”
A Venezuela native, Rodriguez has compiled a lifetime 4.03 ERA over 127 big-league appearances (122 starts), all of them in a Red Sox uniform.

Emmanuel Sanders opens up on COVID experience: 'I don't want to wake up in the middle of the night and I can't breathe'
The NFL hasn't been able to exactly steer clear of the coronavirus, as several teams have seen players, coaches or staff members fall ill and miss time as a result of the the unfortunate occurrence. Still, most cases have come and gone without too much drama surrounding them. Cam Newton apparently didn't have to battle with too many symptoms. Coaches like Anthony Lynn and Doug Pederson seemed to have avoided any major cases. In fact, the most prominent case in major sports that I can think of was that of not an NFL player, but of MLB star Freddie Freeman, who had a frightening experience.
However, a recent case in the NFL that came down on Saints wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders has proven to be a harrowing experience for the veteran. He opened up on what he's gone through to this point on the "17 Weeks" podcast.
"I never thought in a million years it'd come down to this, but we take it in strides and we're making the best of it," Sanders said.
Among his symptoms are high fevers that predominantly come on at night, a general "loopy" feeling, exhaustion and body aches.
"Every night I go to sleep, I'm like, 'Lord, please, just let me wake up in the morning feeling good,' " Sanders said. "I don't want to wake up in the middle of the night and I can't breathe."
He says that watching and hearing some of the headlines surrounding COVID's severity and some of the worst cases have intensified his fears.
"In the back of your head — and you might think you're healthy — but in the back of your head you don't know it," Sanders said. "You don't know this virus, nobody knows anything about the virus, you don't know how your body is gonna react and you don't know at any moment, if sh-- would go south, right?
"So, it's scary, but at the same time I'm a god-fearing man. So I understand if God wants me to go out with COVID, then I'm gonna go out with COVID, but it's still in the back of my head."
Thankfully, he says that he feels good currently, though he's still dealing with some symptoms that he has had since the beginning, especially at night. The first symptoms he experienced were exhaustion and a lot of saliva in his mouth. Sanders showed up to practice earlier on the day that he eventually tested positive.
"...My wife, she told me the day before, she was like, 'I can't taste or smell anything,' " Sanders said. "So that kind of threw me off a little bit. So then the next day, I showed up to work and I'm running routes and I just don't feel good. So I ended up telling the trainers."
Sanders told the trainers about his wife's symptoms and they promptly took him to get tested. After a test at the facility and an additional test at another doctor, both results came back positive, much to Sanders' surprise.
"I just was like, what the hell?" Sanders said. "Truthfully, I don't really go anywhere. The only places I've been was to take my son to go train for basketball and for football, and so I don't know if that's the only place. I possibly could have contracted it unless, me and my wife, we went and had dinner one night as well."
Currently, Sanders and his wife, Gabriella, are quarantining together, while his kids and mother-in-law tested negative and flew back to the Sanders' other house in Denver. Though he was more scared for his wife than he was for himself, he says that Gabriella has stayed strong.
"She's handling it like a champ," Sanders said. "Welcome to 2020."

Texans close facility after player tests positive for COVID-19
HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- A Texans player has tested positive for COVID-19, leading the team to close its facility for deep cleaning.
The Texans learned late Tuesday night of a player's positive test result, and the player was immediately self-isolated.
In a statement released Wednesday morning, the Texans said their infection control officer, who is medical director Geoff Kaplan, and other members of the infection response team is working with the NFL to perform contact tracing.
"We are in close consultation with the NFL, as well as our team of independent doctors and specialists, and will follow their guidance regarding our scheduled bye week operations," the statement says.

Buffalo Bills TE Dawson Knox has tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced on Saturday. Knox, along with fellow tight ends Lee Smith, Tommy Sweeney, and Nate Becker were all subsequently placed on the league’s Reserve/Covid-19 list, due to having close contact with Knox. Becker is on the practice squad and Sweeney is on the reserve/PUP list, so only Knox and Smith are taken off the 53-man active roster.
.@BuffaloBills roster moves: pic.twitter.com/vqen6XZKsg— Buffalo Bills PR (@BuffaloBillsPR) October 24, 2020The team’s game at the New York Jets on Sunday is still on schedule.
That leaves the Bills with two active roster tight ends to play in the game, Tyler Kroft and Reggie Gilliam.
According to league rules, the Bills are allowed to activate players from the practice squad in order to take the place of any active players placed on Reserve/Covid. They are also allowed two weekly practice squad elevations each week, giving them four total or this game. Linebacker Andre Smith, cornerback Dane Jackson, wide receiver Duke Williams, and offensive lineman Jordan Devey were all elevated on Saturday.
The team also announced that linebacker Tyrel Dodson was placed on Injured Reserve with a hamstring injury. That moves leaves one open roster spot, which could eventually be used for offensive lineman Jon Feliciano, who is eligible to return from Injured Reserve. Dodson will now have tombs at least the next three games.
